Presidents Day 2008, Wailua to Kalalau Valley in Kokee State Park

Kapaa to Lihue to Puhi, on Kuhio Highway

Here we are just starting out, passing the sign in front of the airport in Lihue.

First, a stop at Jamba Juice for breakfast.  We read the newspaper and drank our Jamba outside under the coconut trees.

And past the horses in the field in front of Gaylord's Restaurant.

Puhi to Lawai to Kalaheo to Eleele to Hanapepe, on Kaumualii Hwy

Heading South just past Puhi, Max is on Anne's lap, of course.

Past the entrance to the tree tunnel, there are African Tulip trees everywhere, and some canyons on the inland side.

Through Hanapepe - there are lots of Queen Emma's Bougainvillea on the south side.

Hanapepe to Makaweli to Waimea to Kekaha, on Kaumualii Hwy

Gay & Robinson Plantation still grows sugar cane on the south and west side of Kauai.

The shower trees were in bloom.

Across from the Kekaha beach is a small Catholic Cemetery in front of the closed sugar mill.

Kekaha to Waimea Valley to Kokee State Park to Kalalau Valley, on Kokee Road

The highway up into Waimea Canyon has a traffic light that seems like it is out in the middle on nowhere.  No really, the highway is crossed by a dirt "cane haul" road.  This was actually the first traffic light on Kauai to let the cane trucks safely cross into the mill.

Up and up and up into Waimea Canyon.

We're up above 4,000 feet at the Kalalau Valley overlook.  I wouldn't recommend this no matter how much you want to get a good picture.

At this altitude there are completely different trees and plants.  Some species of trees that grow at this altitude are unique.

The view at the Kalalau Valley overlook is simply incredible.
