Telecommuting, distance working, whatever you call it, the rewards are significant when you can live where you want and still work where you want. But the challenges are just as great. Here are two hints to making it work.

The distinction between working and not working blurs when you telecommute. By 2pm Hawaiian time my Chicago colleagues have gone home for the day. I usually eat at late lunch at the Kalapaki Beach Hut where there's a great view of the beach, trade winds blowing almost everyday, and the best fish sandwich on Kauai. I finish my day’s email using my Sony Clie and its keyboard. The folding keyboard is a great design: I do my email as easily at the Beach Hut as I can in my office. Part of my job as a software architect means I have to know what’s going on in the world: business trends and product trends affect what we have to do to make our product successful. Using AvantGo my Palm always has the latest issue of CNN, the BBC and The New York Times. Sometimes I’m quicker to pickup on news of an industry trend quicker than my coworkers “back at the office.” If you drive by Kalapaki Beach late in the afternoon and see my 1970 Ford Ranchero parked there, stop and say hi. Before you think I've got it just too easy, remember, although it is a great place, I'm still working. And since my office is also my home I often find myself working at 8 PM too. |
